An Exhilarating Historical Romance: “Family Secrets” by Candice Kohl

Esther Brown’s family is falling apart around her. Widowed and re-married with two daughters, Esther is unable to control her eldest daughter Geneva’s wayward ways and sends Geneva to live with her aunt and her aunt’s husband in Ivy Glen, a small town outside Chicago. Esther’s attempt to find salvation for her child sets in motion a series of dramatic events that tests the bonds of one family as they discover ‘Family Secrets.’

Based on fact, ‘Family Secrets’ is set in a 1920’s Chicago suburb and told from the perspectives of multiple family members. This dramatic tale has it all: passion, betrayal, deception, forgiveness and a glimpse into the unconditional ties that bind a family together.

Candice Kohl was born and spent most of her life in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There she worked as a copywriter in advertising and public relations. She also performed as an actress at the Sunset Playhouse, a major Midwest community theatre. In her spare time, she taught English as a second language to recently arrived immigrants. She and her husband, Phil Brabant, raised two sons: Christopher is a jazz musician in New Orleans and Dustin is a student in Milwaukee.

In 1993, her first book, “The String on a Roast Won’t Catch Fire in the Oven: An A to Z Encyclopedia of Common Sense” was released with excellent reviews, including one by the American Library Association. Her other titles include “Destiny’s Disguise” and “A Twist in Time.” Kohl has had numerous articles published in periodicals and newspapers, but her greatest passion has always been romance.

Get a different take on classic stories in Dame Darcy’s ‘Frightful Fairy Tales’

Sinister storytelling has never been so delightful! Legendary comic book artist Dame Darcy delves deep into the cauldron of romantic horror with five haunting fables, each certain to entice you with enchanting damsels, charming lads and cads, and other beguiling characters. Each skillfully crafted tale is adorned with Darcy’s elaborate trademark illustrations, drawn in Victorian fashion, making this collection seem authentically from another era. Detailed with alluring beauty, elegant imagination, and wicked humor, ‘Frightful Fairy Tales’ unleashes ghastly mortals from the dark closet into your subconscious.

“Never have I read a fairytale as grim and delightfully horrific as those in Dame Darcy’s Frightful Fairytales. Beautiful in their simplicity, they read like any traditional child’s fairytale. However, the nine fables included in this book are far from childish. They’re stories of innocence and romance told amidst a world of supernatural brutality… Dame Darcy’s playful and tongue-in-cheek prose will have you laughing one moment, then gasping in horror the next.

Each story is short and easy to read, ideal for anyone looking to fill a spare fifteen minutes. What really makes the book come alive though are Dame Darcy’s illustrations. Fans of her other work will immediately recognize her gothic Victorianesque style, and even those who aren’t will be enthralled by the originality of her artwork.”

Gilled Vegetable Quinoa Salad

1 cup quinoa, uncooked
1 medium zucchini, cut lengthwise
1 medium yellow squash, cut lengthwise
1 clove garlic, chopped
1 tbsp garlic cloves, roasted
1 tbsp shallots, roasted
1 tbsp Parmesan cheese, grated
3 Roma tomatoes cut lengthwise
2 cups vegetable stock or water
¼ cup olive oil
¼ tsp dried basil
¼ tsp dried oregano
¼ tsp dried thyme
¼ tsp dried rosemary, crushed

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Combine olive oil, basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary and unroasted garlic in a zip-top bag or large bowl. Add the zucchini, squash, and tomatoes to the marinade, mixing to coat thoroughly. Let sit 30 minutes or up to 2 hours.

Roast the shallots and the remaining garlic for 8-10 minutes; let cool, then chop coarsely.

Remove vegetables from the marinade and grill over medium-high heat, let cool, then cut into 1-inch pieces.

To cook the quinoa, rinse grain in colander under cold water to remove naturally occurring resin; drain. Bring water to a boil in a pot; add quinoa. Simmer over medium heat for about 20 minutes or until all liquid is absorbed.

Toss cooked quinoa, grilled vegetables, roasted garlic and shallots, and Parmesan cheese in a bowl.

Serve immediately.

Laughing is the cure in ‘Laughter was God’s Idea: Stories About Healing Humor’ by Jack Hinson

It is believed that humor is one of God’s greatest gifts to humanity. It was His intention from the beginning to provide us with a mechanism to address the tension of existence. He knew His children, living under pressure in a world of demands and deadlines, would need a way to release, so He created something called laughter. Laughter reduces muscle tension, exercises our lungs, and strengthens our immune system. Laughter is still the best medicine.

Readers of Jack Hinson’s work “Laughter Was God’s Idea” will gain insight and courage to accept the gift of laughter as a means to enjoy life and make the world a better place. Through excessive doses of laughter every day, and by sharing this extraordinary gift with others, it is Hinson’s intention to bring to light the healing power of humor.

Jack Hinson is a native of Charleston, South Carolina. He holds degrees from Mars Hill College, Wake Forest University and Southeastern Seminary. He became Board Certified with the Association of Professional Chaplains upon completion of studies at Dorothea Dix Hospital, NC Baptist School of Pastoral Care and the Patrick B. Harris Hospital. He served as pastor for seventeen years before becoming the first full time chaplain at Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva, North Carolina, where he shared his humor and reassuring comfort with patients and families on a daily basis. He is an early pioneer recognizing the positive influence of humor in healthcare and medicine. Academic medical centers and scientific studies have confirmed Jack’s long held belief that there is therapeutic benefit to humor and laughter.
