People today consider many different things as constituting man’s dilemma—health problems, unemployment, poverty, crime, war, and so on. Each, of course, is a problem found in every society, excluding none. One could say man’s dilemma is universal.  However, each of the things listed above is actually the result of man’s dilemma, and not the cause. The cause is found in man’s depravity. In that depravity, every un-regenerated human being sets his own standard for conducting his life. Man has rejected the absolute standard of his creator, and as a result is alienated not only from God, but from his fellow man. Man has no solution for this and therein lies the dilemma. God, on the other hand, has the solution; it is found in His provision, the Lord Jesus Christ.  In the pages of this work the author considers man’s dilemma God’s solution from eleven different perspectives. Each chapter is a study in itself but fits nicely as one completed work.

Steve Lampman became a Christian on November 17, 1961 when as a young marine on liberty he came upon a street meeting held by Open Air Campaigners for Christ in the city of Los Angeles, California. For the remaining three years of his enlistment after coming to faith, Steve immersed himself in various books and studies concerning his relationship with Christ. During those three years, he worshipped in Los Angeles and was discipled by three families who were members of Granada Heights Friends Church and nurtured his faith. It was the foundation gained in those years that sustained him through several tumultuous years during which he walked away from a faithful walk with the Lord and lived as a prodigal son.

Terry Jean Wiemuth Michelsen moved to the mountains of western North Carolina from the suburbs of Chicago in 2001.  Michelsen holds a B.A. in English Literature, an M.A. in History, and a post-baccalaureate certificate in English/Professional Writing.  Her most treasured career was as Academic Advisor at Western Carolina University employing her intuitive skills as counselor and mentor to her students.  Her position was eliminated due to budget cuts which provided her with her most cherished opportunity to become a writer.

Michelsen’s publications include ‘Birds of Spirit,’ ‘Sweet Earth,’ ‘Raging River, ‘and ‘Soaring on Wings of Word.’  Her poetry has been published in ‘Mused Literary Review.’  Her historical scholarship was published in ‘Women Building Chicago 1790-1990’ (2001) edited by Schultz and Hast, and was cited in ‘Good Heart’s (2006) by Suellen Hoy.  Her book reviews on academic advising have been published in ‘NACADA.’  Also a painter, her paintings are displayed at galleries, bookstores, and festivals.

He became Board Certified with the Association of Professional Chaplains upon completion of studies at Dorothea Dix Hospital, NC Baptist School of Pastoral Care and the Patrick B. Harris Hospital. He served as pastor for seventeen years before becoming the first full time chaplain at Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva, North Carolina, where he shared his humor and reassuring comfort with patients and families on a daily basis. He is an early pioneer recognizing the positive influence of humor in healthcare and medicine. Academic medical centers and scientific studies have confirmed Jack’s long held belief that there is therapeutic benefit to humor and laughter.

BOOK REVIEW: Dr. Linda Harper’s “Give”

I wanted to read Give in order to learn how to give more authentically.  In many ways the book was what I expected in terms of learning to give according to your values and to give freely in every sense of the word.  Had that been all there was, I would have been satisfied with the book and then put it down and promptly forgotten about it. 

This book rose above my expectations for two main reasons.  The first of these was the importance of giving to oneself.   I think many people, myself included, tend to put self-nurturing last on their ever increasing to-do lists.  What Ms Harper does beautifully is to challenge this notion that “spoiling” ourselves is somehow wanton.  She reminds, or in some cases teaches, us that only when we are kind to ourselves, when we allow ourselves time to replenish and heal and even maybe have a little pampering are we in any way able to give to others.  And the better we treat ourselves, the better we will be equipped to give to others.  I found this to be a very powerful message and one that I have already started to incorporate into my daily habits.

The book also looks at various types of inauthentic giving and that’s where it started to get uncomfortable. I certainly recognized some of the not-so-pleasant aspects of my personality in one of the types, and it was not entirely pleasant reading! Whilst I identified a lot more with one of the types, there were ideas and suggestions that resonated with me in each of the chapters.  By saying this was an uncomfortable read, by no means am I implying any criticism of the book. When I read these types of books, I want to be made uncomfortable, to be provoked, to have my actions challenged (albeit gently, which is exactly how Ms Harper does it) as it is these feelings that can provide the impetus for lasting change.

 On the strength of this book, I will definitely read more by Ms Harper . . . On an Amazon style review, I would give this 4 stars.

     Dr. Linda Harper, Ph.D., has been a clinical psychologist for 29 years in private practice with her husband in Evergreen Park, Illinois. She is also the author of ‘The Tao of Eating: Feeding Your Soul through Everyday Experiences with Food’ (Innisfree Press,1998), ‘Eat: A Guide to Discovering Your Natural Relationship with Food’ (Blue Star Books, 2012), and ‘Give to Your Heart’s Content…Without Giving Yourself Away’ (Innisfree Press, 2002, and InnerOcean Publishing, 2004).   
     Dr. Harper is an international speaker and has given the keynote address at a variety of national conferences and volunteer recognition events across the United States and in Canada, Bali, Egypt and Paris, France.
